Why To Try This Hazelnut Iced Coffee

There are plenty of reasons why you should try to make this homemade hazelnut iced latte at home:

    1. It is very easy – only a handful of ingredients are involved in 4 simple steps!
    2. You can scale it up or down as needed – hosting a crowd? Simply multiply the amount of ingredients by the number of servings.
    3. Make it ahead - fill up a thermal flask (or a bottle with a lid) and keep it in the fridge or in an ice box until you are ready to enjoy this hazelnut-flavoured iced coffee. Give it a shake before serving and pour it over ice. Finish it off with appropriate toppings and voila, the perfect summer drink is good to go in no time! Plus, keeping it in the thermal flask also makes it great for picnics!
    4. You can save some money by prepping iced coffees at home – it is more budget friendly than buying them from a coffee shop, and, you can have them any time, in the comfort of your home!
    5. It can be healthier than iced coffee from a café, as you have full control over the amount of sugar and fat that goes into it.

Key Ingredients For Hazelnut Iced Coffee

There are only four ingredients needed in this homemade iced coffee, with three optional toppings:

    • Ice – ice cubes, reusable ice cubes or crushed ice will all work but will result in different texture of the drink. If you fancy an iced coffee ‘on rocks,’ then opt for ice cubes or reusable ice cubes. Crushed ice will give the iced coffee a bit of a crunchy feel. Regular ice cubes and crushed ice will dilute the coffee, whilst reusable ones will not.
    • Semi-skimmed milk – regular cow’s milk is added for a milky taste. You can, however, omit it if you preferblack iced coffee.
    • Black coffee – instant coffee, or large espresso/American-style coffee, will do. Choose one that is available to you.
    • Hazelnut syrup is added for the delicate hazelnutty flavour. Check the coffee, tea and drinks section in your grocery store – they may have it there, otherwise you can buy it online or in a specialist barista shops or coffee shops. Use syrup that is sugar free, if possible.

This hazelnut iced latte is topped with spray cream (whipped, squirty cream), chocolate sauce and chopped hazelnuts for an extra crunch. These are all optional, however, recommended for the wow-factor and the feeling of indulgence – why not to treat yourself from time to time?

    Substitutes & Variations

A few components of this recipe can be replaced by their alternatives. Here are some suggestions on how to swap them:

    • Use cold brew instead of regular instant coffee or espresso.
    • Add caffeine-free coffee for hazelnut decaf coffee.
    • Use caramel (toffee) sauce instead of chocolate sauce.
    • Swap cow’s milk for plant-based milk – oat, almond or soy milk will work great in this recipe.
    • For a vegan-friendly hazelnut iced coffee, use vegan chocolate sauce and vegan squirty cream.

    Iced Hazelnut Vanilla Coffee

For extra indulgent flavour with a hint of sweet vanilla, add vanilla extract or vanilla syrup when mixing the coffee and hazelnut syrup.

    Ferrero Rocher Iced Coffee

Using a rolling pin, carefully crush 2x Ferrero Rocher chocolates and place them in a cup, add hot coffee, hazelnut syrup and stir. Leave to cool down to room temperature, then serve on ice with milk, cream and top with squirty cream, chocolate sauce and chopped hazelnuts (or another crushed Ferrero Rocher).

How To Make Hazelnut Iced Coffee

The beauty of this cold hazelnut coffee is the fact that you can make it easily at home, here is how:

    1. Mix cold coffee with hazelnut syrup.
    2. Add ice and milk to a glass.
    3. Pour over the hazelnut coffee.
    4. Decorate with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and chopped hazelnuts and enjoy.

For exact measurements and detailed instructions, find the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

    Top Tips

Here are a few tips on how to make this iced hazelnut coffee super cold:

    • Pre-chill the glass by placing it in the fridge for 30 minutes before making this iced coffee.
    • Only use cold water when making the coffee, or cool the water in the fridge for 30-60 minutes before making this iced coffee.

    Storage

This iced hazelnut coffee can be made in advance. Keep the coffee and hazelnut blend in a sealed container (jar or bottle) in the fridge for up to 2 days. Shake or stir it well before serving, as the syrup will sit at the bottom of the jar. Only add the toppings when you are ready to serve the coffee.

You can also freeze this iced coffee with hazelnut flavour – pour the hazelnutty coffee mix in an ice cube tray and keep it upright in the freezer for up to a year. Serve a handful of frozen hazelnut coffee cubes with fresh milk, your favourite toppings, and you’re good to go! No need to add more ice, the coffee will be ice cold already.

    FAQs

Is coffee with hazelnut good for you?

Hazelnut coffee can have some health benefits thanks to the added hazelnuts which are rich in healthy fats, fibre, manganese, magnesium, and vitamin E. Hazelnuts are a source of antioxidants, help maintain good heart health and have anti-cancerous properties. Hazelnut coffee, however, may be high in calories, depending on how much sugar or syrup is added, and if it contains dairy and dessert sauces.

What does hazelnut iced coffee taste like?

Cold hazelnut coffee has mild sweet flavour, with a hint of chocolate and nuts. It can also taste creamy if cream of milk is added.
